Notebook Entry - The Namesake

What do you think about the ease with which Gogol adopts Maxine's family culture?

I think Gogol adopts it with ease, he certainly is amazed with how they act and he notices that his culture is not even close to how theirs is, he feels more welcome and in control, of course, at first, he ahs to get used to it and he ahs to get over the fact that his parents culture is, in a way, cold, he also notices in Maxine's family something that is not in his family, on page 138 of the book, we see that Gerald and Lydia, Maxine's parents, are very affectionate with each other and they display it openly whereas, in Gogol's parents, he's never seen anything of physical kindness or affection with each other or him and his sister, the only small sign of affection is on page 50 when Ashima says how she misses the presence of her son running around and tugging at her dress and talking in little gibberish, this is one of the only signs of affection in the book where she reminisces on that feeling but it is the first time she has thought about it too we don't see any mention of other type of affection towards her kids besides this one, she does show she cares but at the same time she doesn't she doesn't hug them or caress them as is common for most mothers to do, like Maxine's mother and father who show it to each other.
